History of Grama Panchayat
The Vandazhi region was once a place rich in water resources and dense forests. There are different opinions about the origin of the name "Vandazhi". It is believed that the name originated either from the ritual called "Van Aazhi" (fire-pit jumping) performed as part of religious customs, or from the word "Aazhi", which indicates a place where water stagnates.
In the olden days, tribals lived here by collecting forest produce for their livelihood. Known as "Kochikkadar", they worshipped the deity Malamuthan and followed special rituals. Later, the Nellikallidam royal family, the Veluthakkal family, and the Namboothiris established temples and places of worship in this region.
Many communities migrated here for trade and agriculture, including Tamil traders, Tamil Christians, potters from Andhra, and the Kavara community from Karnataka. The Muslim and Christian communities also grew strong later. Education and renaissance movements brought great changes to the society. The local people actively participated in farmers' movements and freedom struggles.
With the construction of the Mangalam Dam in 1952, there was social, cultural, and economic growth in Vandazhi and the surrounding areas. Government institutions, commercial centers, and educational institutions developed, and Mangalam Dam, Vandazhi, and Mudappallur became small towns. The natural beauty of Mangalam Dam has also elevated the region into a tourist destination.
